Randy,
I have investigated this too. Basically those on the list did NOT advise
using this transmission. The spread from 2nd to 3rd is very large. One
thing I have considered is that Jeep used a Toploader from 1980 to 1986.
They were the T-176, T-177, T-178. The T-178 has a 3.01 first and a rather
even spread to the 1:1 final. My theory was to run taller tires in the rear
thus getting the 3.01 first about equal to the 2.78 of a regular wide ratio.
The effective result would have had the 1:1 final drive equal to a smaller
tire setup with some form of overdrive. Would it work? Who knows. I have
searched for the T-178 (the trans with the right ratio) for years and never
found one.
