I've read a bunch of discussions about tranny options, but I'm not
certain I ever heard about this one. Or maybe I missed the discussion
somewhere. According to an article in the September '08 "Hot Rod
Deluxe" mag. (a street rod mag.), there was a Ford Top Loader made
briefly in '77 and '78 where they swapped the 3rd and 4th gears and
re-ratio'ed so that 3rd was 1:1 and 4th was 0.81:1 It was sold as a 3
speed with overdrive and was used mostly in Pick-up's, Econoline Vans,
and ocassionally in a Monarch, Granada and Fairmont. They say it's not
quite as robust as a standard Top Loader, but a good option for a
lighter vehicle (ala Tiger). Has anyone ever used one of these? Does
it work? Does it require a tailshaft swap?
Thanks- Randy
