The toploader was originally finished with a phosphate coating. It leaves a
dark sorta natural finish. It is not all that rust resistant so 40 years
later people think they had no coating at all. Black paint would not be
factory correct.
A lot of the mustang restorers will use Eastwood "Cast Blast" spray cans to
cover "bare cast iron" parts.
It looks pretty close to bare cast iron and it won't rust.
