Anyone who pulls their Tiger engine from the top should invest in the engine
plate Theo found for sale at carshop.AND after thinking about it the plate
would also work great when dropping the engine out the bottom. I will use it
to lift the car high enough to set my jack stands and then remove engine
mounts etc and I will be hooked to the engine the entire time until I slide
it from under the car. In my head anyway.I have another engine pulling aid
that I made at work. I found some 2.5" conduit and made two A frames.I
welded a plate on the bottom of each leg so I could bolt caster wheels on
all four corners. I cut two pices of quater inch plate and burned four holes
so I could bolt the A frame to a 4" I beam. I welded one plate to the A legs
and another to the ends of the beam.I made this at work and needed to be
able to haul it home, so the idea was to design it so I could take it apart.
When the plate on the A leg is bolted to the plate on the end of the I beam,
I have a trolley beam aproximately 8 feet high and wide enough for a ful
size pickup truck to drive between. I had to lay it down and slide it in
position so when it was rolled up it would set in between two rafters in my
shop. That allows me to roll the whole thing(rember the caster wheels) left
and right and gives my two foot of movement front and back. This movment
allows me to roll the engine towards the transmission if it is left in a car
and just the engine was removed, Like Dr. M does his Tiger when he use to
pull the engine and leave the tranny. I have two trolleys on the I beam and
a chainfall hanging from each. I use the lift very often. It is the bomb
when sharpening lawnmower blades, hooking a nylon choker to a Harley frame
and picking the scoot up to change wheels etc. Althoough the main idea was
an A frame that I could use to pull engines it has been used to lift many
items, including heavy objects from the back of a truck. If you ever have
the oppurtunity to find the material cheap it is worth your time to
manufacture one and trolleys and chainfalls are available from several
places..My ceiling is also low but I rolled it up, with help of course and
it sets up in the ceiling between two rafters. mine is in a shop, so the
insides arent finsihed so if you anted one in your garage at home you would
have to cut the drywall and box in the rafters after the lift was rolled in
place. With a little work it would appear to have been desinged to have the
lift between the rafters and boxing the rafters back in with drywall and
some paint MIGHT make the Mrs. allow you to cut the ceiling up in her
garage. Again if more detail is desired by anyone wanting a great engine
pulling monorail, just ask.
Cheers, Tony
