Hi Jim,
As was remarked just a few weeks ago, check your front wheel bearings.
If they're loose, then the first pumps of the pedal re-set the pads
relative to the rotors according to how the hubs are loaded right at
that time. The corollary on the rear axle is radial play in the axle
bearings, but that wouldn't happen without very noticeable rumbling
noises that vary with speed.
