The selection of the carb, depends on more than just size. The
variables are rpm range, ci, rear end ratio, AT or stick, 4 or 5 speed
with OD, tire size, cam, car weight, and the intended purpose. There is
also the issue of a vacuum secondary or double pumper. Most vac
secondaries are not adjusted, or never have been and when they are the
car really comes alive. Is your engine fresh or tired. Do your brakes
drag, and is the alignment correct.
Finally there is way you drive.
I have a 5.0L, stock cam, Edelbrock F4B, a 3.54 rear, T-5 trans, with
.63 5th, same approximate diameter tires, and limit the car to 5100 rpm,
and am using a Holley 600 cfm double pumper. On the road in 5th, I get
over 20 mpg.
If I stood on the go pedal all the time in lower gears, mileage would be
terrible.
If you have a vac secondary that is not adjusted for the car, and the
rest of the car is not tuned, preferably by dyno tuning, then changing
carbs, won't do anything.
Call Holley or Demon, and tell them what you have and the rest of the
formula, and they will tell you immediately what carb.
