I also have a Rootes original ammeter and harness. I found it around
1980 in a wrecked Series V Alpine when I was searching for an ammeter,
and recognized that the wiring was original also, so took that as well.
The two wires on the ammeter are, by judgement, 10 gauge, and the outer
cover of the wires measures 0.172" in diameter. One of the wires is all
Brown, the other is Brown with a longitudinal white stripe. I've noticed
that with this color, the white stripe often changes to an ivory color
after exposure to oil and dirt. The two wires were taped together in
exactly the same manner as the main harness is taped. In the Alpine, the
harness was plenty long enough for the wires to connect as required in
the back left corner of the engine compartment.
