Gunny,
It's been done by a lot of Tiger owners, using lots of different hardware. CAT
makes a bracket that lets you use a Ford alternator, but with some modification,
can be adapted to fit GM or other brand alternators.
You can keep your ammeter although you should be aware that the alternator
output
can exceed the 30 amp span of the gauge considerably, and this may damage the
gauge. Try finding a MkII's 50 amp gauge.
Online wiring diagrams by Bill Gegg are in a couple of places (try
TigersUnited.com or http://members.home.net/tsmit/mk1wire.html). The wiring of
internally regulated alternators is very straightforward, and you can use most
of
the existing generator wiring if it's in good shape. My conversion is written up
at http://members.home.net/tsmit/alternator.html and it's been going strong for
the last couple of years.
If you're not picky about what brand of alternator then you should look around
at
an import autowreckers' and see if you can find an internally-regulated example
that's short enough to fit in front of the cylinder head (mine was about 1/2"
too
long), and still use the stock fan belt alignment. Doing this will let you run a
much shorter belt, and the bracket you build can be much shorter, stiffer, and
lighter.
Good luck, and let me know if I can answer any questions.
