My T10 has begun leaking oil at the output shaft. I've replaced the seal for
the driveshaft yoke but the leak continues. It appears oil is working its way
down the splines of the output shaft and exiting at the front universal
joint. Here's where the questions come in.
1) Is there a seal on the output shaft further inside the tailpiece which
may have failed? If so, can it be replaced in the car?
2) While a blind yoke could be used to retain oil, mine cannot be sealed.
This is because, while the output shaft only extends 1" beyond the
tailpiece, the yoke (6.75" long) is inserted so far that the output shaft
passes all the way through the yoke and exposes 1/8" of splines near the
front universal joint. Is this normal (for a T10)?
2a) A related question is the driveshaft length. The yoke is so far into the
tailpiece that it is very nearly bottomed against the tailpiece seal. I've
been extremely careful to install the motor mounts and rear end correctly
when they've been out (engine once, rear several times) so I'm confident
they're right. But I'm puzzled why the factory would have installed a
driveshaft of such a critical length when being 1" shorter would make life
easy all the way around. By the way, my driveshaft measures 21.25" center
to center on the u-joint yoke holes. Can anyone confirm this length?
Anybody had to shorten a driveshaft?
My first priority is to get the oil leak resolved. But I'm wondering if I've
got other peripheral issues I should address at the same time. Any
assistance/information and/or speculation greatly appreciated.
Thanks
