The easiest way to tell if the toploader is a "wide ratio" is to remove the 
top and examine the input gear.  In the wide ratio transmission, this input 
gear is smaller in diameter than the syncro portion at the rear of this 
gear.  The close ratio input gear is just about the same size as the 
syncro.  The other possibility is that it will have a "short" nose (.800") 
as opposed to the 1.125" nose on all smallblock transmissions.  This short 
nose gear from big block applications can be used but it will require a 
special pilot bearing that is longer than the OEM unit.
