Speaking of labor intensive engines.
Etorre Bugatti's recommended cold morning start-up technique suggested draining
the castor oil engine lubricant into a suitable container, and thinning it out
in the morning on your wood fired stove.
The engine was designed without head gaskets. No, the machining was not so
accurate that a gasket was unnecessary, but the head was not removable, being
an integral part of the block. Valves were inserted from the bottom, with the
crankshaft removed.
