Chris,
We've rebuilt Speedo and other instruments for Sunbeam for over 20 years.
What you describe sounds like a compressed O ring under the glass of the
unit. Try taking the bezel and glass off and see if you have the same
problem. Many customers send in their units for rebuild and nothing is wrong
with them except for the compressed or missing rubber O ring under the glass.
What happens is that the center of the needle gets hung up on the glass
surface and thus stops in various positions.
Sold cables for years and early Mustang and Fairlane is correct, the cable
should work without any modification. You could also check out the Speedo
drive gear, the nylon one located on the transmission end.
