Doug: It was used as a sound deadener. Glueing the thick paper to the
doors stops the surface from acting like a drun head, amplifing road
vibrations. Eastwood sells sheets of self adhesive thick plastic to
replace the old style tar paper. Probably a good idea, since it can't
retain water like a paper based product can.
