James:
A kit will work fine as long as the cylinder wall in the clutch master is
not pitted. You must be very careful about taking too much material out of
the bore and thus increasing the size to the point where the seal won't
hold pressure. I don't know how much you can take out in order to smooth
the bore; I'm sure someone on the list can tell you that, though. I have
rebuilt clutch masters and slaves in the past and some I've gotten to work
and others I haven't. If you've got the money, I would recommend replacing
the cylinder. I replaced the master on my Mk1A about a year ago and so
far, so good. I was even able to use the original cap with it, as the
replacement comes with some sort of a plastic cap.
Do yourself a favor, however. Whatever you do to the master, also do to
the slave. Either rebuild or replace the slave at the same time. I have
heard time and time again from people who have been there to always do both
or you will be doing the one you didn't touch shortly thereafter, anyway.
I have tried that, too, and found those words to be very wise words,
indeed. Who wants to go through having to bleed the clutch hydralics more
than once, right? Good luck and have a Merry Christmas!
