Disassemble one of the covers used if the clock isn't present.  The plastic 
center is just held in by a couple tabs.  The chrome ring becomes your adapter. 
I put a voltmeter from a Triumph in mine, with the new gauge located behind the 
chrome ring.  I attached it with either epoxy of industrial strength hot melt 
glue (This was maybe 10 years back).  Just spread the "U" bracket a bit more, 
and don't tighten it too much.  The resulting chrome around the gauge, the trim 
plus a bit of the gauge's ring, is a bit wider that the other gauges, but it's 
not that noticeable

I want to install a water temperature gauge where the clock would normally be.  
That opening is 2.375",,..........
