Oh yeah, the GM trick. My first "modern car" growing up was a Buick Skyhawk
(Cavalier) the required you to push the clutch in to start. I broke that
habit after that car fortunately. If I recall, I think you even had to put
in reverse to lock the ignition. Icky.

My first guess would be that someone starts his car in gear with the
clutch engaged, and the other starts his in neutral.
