Yup, as Frank says, if the valve guides are bad, it will smoke whenever
manifold vacuum is high, because the vacuum in the cylinders is sucking oil
right past the valves.
If the rings are bad, it will tend to smoke when the pressure in the
cylinder is the greatest and it pushes right past the rings.
