Joe,
Short answer, swap the coil and change plug wires,
easy and relatively cheap. Long anecdote below.
Recently at the race track my Sprite was doing the
same thing with less frequency. The tach was dancing
wildly, and at first the miss was almost undetectable
- the car was pulling well past 7000 RPM (similar
setup to yours except it's a stock points
distributor), but the tach was bouncing all over the
place. With the tach dancing, it indicates the low
tension (points) circuit. We changed everything except
the coil. Still there, except now it died completely.
It would start up if left alone, but was running
progressively worse as it warmed. We changed the coil
(Bosch Blue, maybe a year old) and it went away
immediately and completely. I've always looked
sideways at people who claimed coils were going bad,
as I always thought they either worked or didn't, and
I'd never had one go bad before, but now I have.
