This was indeed a long time ago, and the last one I remember was on an
Austin A40 engine installed in a TD at the time, had to be in the
mid-sixties. 1964 maybe?

I don't have the slightest idea if that engine was configured the same
as our A series engines, but some solutions come to mind:

1. Ignore the front bearing and hope for the best.
2. Little tiny wrenches.
3. The Austin engine in that TD sat up so high that you could probably
get all that front stuff off with the engine in the car.

Dad grew frustrated with the Austin engine in that thing. He replaced
it with an old Studebaker straight six engine, circa 1950's. He even
built a shift linkage to operate the three speed transmission from the
top rather than the side.

Maybe the bearing replacement didn't work so well.

Like I implied, I don't remember it clearly.

But, but, but, but! How can you get the front main bearing cap off an
"A" series engine with the front pulley, timing chain cover, timing
chain, and sprocket still on the engine? That I'd really love to see!
Please take photos for me!
