Finally did it. Got tired of the Lucas Alt. So with this last failure -
today - I installed the Delco unit ALMOST per Paul's instructions.
Following the instructions for the Spit (Midget 1500) I did have to make a
couple of different mods, but all in all it was easy and Very straight
forward.
The mounting bracket for the Spit must be different from my Midget 1500.
The Midget doesn't have a mounting spacer tube - It does have a wide
mounting bracket. The bracket has a overhang that is the spacer. And
having a spare bracket, I measured, marked, measured again, then measured
and looked 3 or 4 more times (I am one of those guys that usually measures
twice and cuts it toooooo short anyway). Turns out that removal of almost
all of the overhang (+ or - 1/16") leaves you with a mounting bracket that
is perfect for alignment with the belt.
The next thing I noticed was something that I have not liked since the
beginning. I have always hated loosening a bolt on the thermostat housing
whenever I wanted to adjust my alternator or remove the #1 spark plug. So
looking to follow Paul's advice with the J bracket, I noticed that the
offset in the original bracket was approximately the width of a nut. I
looked around, found a stud to fit the thermostat housing instead of a bolt,
installed the stud, cut the J bracket to fit the length. With one washer on
the stud, the J bracket alignment was perfect. It was not necessary to drill
the J bracket off-center, nor was it necessary to both the J bracket to the
original bracket. And the big PLUS of the J bracket is I no longer have to
loosen the thermostat housing to move the Alt.
Oh yes, one more thing, the original belt fit perfect also.
Thanks Paul for the wonderful documentation, instructions, and pictures. It
sure made this job a lot less of a headache.
