Last minute ambush bidding seems to be the way of E-bay these days.  As
another poster pointed out, "Proxy Bidding"  is the way to go.  Enter your
one and only bid for the maximum you would pay for the item fairly late in
the game and sit back with your fingers crossed.  If it goes over that, you
wouldn't want to pay it, if it doesn't go over your max bid you win at the
price sufficient to beat the next highest.

Shipping cost on something like an engine is something you should definitely
check out with the seller before bidding on such an item.
