if you attempt to strip with any media you will end up with a very un even
surface unless you strip evrything to bare metal. due to an operator's
inability to be perfectly consistant in length of time and how fast to pass
over an aerea you can not get an even enough layer removal to give a decent
looking surface for a finish other than brush painting with some type of
enamel( trust me here it looks horrible even if you convince yourself that
all of the brush strokes go the same way!).
first off a serious de greasing with what ever you can find or use in your
aerea is the main ingredient to a nice engine compartment that holds it's
finish(paint will not adhere to grease , oil or silicone brake fluid !
next a wipe down aerea by aerea using prep sol(dupont) or kleecar using only
clean rags like those old t shirts or undies.
before the pre cleaner dries use yet another clean rag to dry the wetted
arera. repete as many times as needed to be able to come up with a clean
rag when done drying the aerea. frequently change rags as not to continue
contaminating aereas with dirty rags. dispose of these and be mindfull
about flamible stuffgoing into the trash and local laws governing that kind
of stuff.
now it is scotch brite time(3m stuff) just like sanding wood work 1 way
scuffing(gentle back and forth motions, no vigorous wild sanding here) the
surface. the idea is to preserve the original finish and use it as a sealer
and a base for a new fresh finish.
any place that there is bare metal spray some "sandable primer" and after it
dries scuff it also . that gets rid of the overspray fuzzies around the
primer. and spray cans will do here from the local auto parts store.
you are now prepared to spray the engine compartment any color you choose!
remember to mask off any stuff you do not want to be painted and the more
you remove (brake lines,heater,shocks etc.) the better your efforts will
look when put back together.
your method of spraying final color are up to you!
just please do not attempt to partial strip layer by layer unless that is
what you do for a profession. the ensuing mess will # 1 really anger(using
a nice term here) you and #2 possibly sour your interest in finishing a job
that now must be stripped to bare metal before proceeding. #3 the hardest
part, it will cost more in both precious time and near double the money now
to fix what you were attempting to do.
