Hi Chuck,

I'll be honest and say I don't know.  I think that to get a definitive answer 
you either need someone who does, or run the engine for a brief minute with 
the fan belt disconnected.

I'm also not sure but I think that running the alternator without a lead can 
cause damage to the alternator (though mine has survived when the lead kept 
coming loose).
