66 Sprite 1275 Marina engine, downflow rad, 74C thermostat,
high capacity water pump (GWP134), bypass hose installed,
heater installed, system filled with ready-made "parafluid"
(20% ethyleno-glycol), standard plastic fan and pulley,
electric non-shrouded fan in front of rad (unbranded) that
operates via an on/off toggle switch on the dashboard ,
dual gauge temp ether capillary tube directly on radiator.
It is not always very hot here, contrary to public belief.
It's actually cold now (10C) and the problem persists:
Engine overheats (above 90C) when at idle in traffic,
temp drops when I move, even going uphill, so, this type
of overheating is what I would like to cure, if possible.
I hate turning the electric fan on because although effective,
it makes a horrible whining noise that is unbearable.
Had the same problem with my Mini, took the rad to a good
rad shop and they installed a larger core (growth towards the
wing - there was space), problem solved.
However I think this cannot happen on the Sprite as the rad
is already a tight fit on every direction so a larger core
will necessitate banging and altering body parts or brackets,
am I right or wrong? What else can I do?
Thanks
