Fellow Spitfirers, I may need a part. Today I was installing a
rebuilt OD (that's a long story) and part of the shifter mechanism
broke. That part is the aluminum casting that holds the shift lever
and anchors the trailing end of the control rod. The gearbox is a
single-rail box with OD. With this setup the trailing end of the
rod, the end with the knuckle that the shifter fits into, goes into
this casting, and another aluminum plate bolts to the back end of the
casting to act as a seal and to hold it in position on the tail of
the OD unit.
The casting just broke. Don't think we stressed it very much but we
must have, I guess. Bummer. I took the pieces to a machine shop a
few minutes from the house and asked if they could heliarc weld it.
They said maybe, it was worth a try. It doesn't take much stress,
doesn't have to hold oil or any pressure. They'll let me know
tomorrow or Monday. If they don't think they can fix it I'll need
another one.
Thanks!
