The kind on my '72 has a bottom that unscrews, revealing a filter pad.
If you want to know if it is clogged, just put your lips on the port that
connects
to the gas tank, and blow.
I would find it pretty strange for one of these to get clogged so badly that
it couldn't let even a little trickle of air through...
