Your fan motor sounds like my 1980.  They are conventional looking
electric motors with a fan blade on the end, as opposed to the pancake
motors used by the Japanese car manufacturers.

A-arms do get damaged from sway bars, particularly large aftermarket
ones.  They just don't take the stiffness of them well.  Check the tabs
the swaybar mounts to the frame on.  I've seen many of them fractured.
