This is a good way to destroy hubs - they need to be supported around the 
entire circumference to prevent distortion. I don't know what the referenced 
hub puller is like, but I presume it is similar in concept at least to the 
original Churchill tool. If that's the case then it's well worth the 
investment. 
For the record, new hubs retail in the UK at over 60 pounds - using the wrong 
tool is hardly cheap :-)
