DOT 5.1 is *NOT* silicone, it is *NOT* DOT 5.
It's extremely poor wording choice on the part of DOT. It would have
been better numbered DOT6. It's the next generation of the glycol based
fluids. DOT 3 - 4 - 5.1
Castrol SRF is DOT 4 glycol.
ATE is a brand name, they market a variety of fluids, DOT 4 being their
most common.
Lucas is a brand name, they market a variety of fluids, DOT 4 being
their most common.
DOT5 is always a silicone based fluid. You must look for, and find on
the container, the DOT number, and select only a fluid that says DOT5
and DOT5 only.

I want to drain my brake system and would like to upgrade to DOT 5 for
the reasons well known for us. I have found different products, as
LUCAS, Castrol SRS, Valvolin 5.1, ATE, but when I asked the suppliers
whether these brake fluids are silicon based or not, they were not
sure
about it. So my question is: Is DOT 5 a guarantee for silicon brake
fluid or it could be anything else (paint eater) as well?
