I had written to the list last week about a problem w/ my 78 Spitfire. The
rear end of the body had dropped and the rear wheels tilted in more than usual
and the car wanted to swerve a little. A couple of respondents replied that
it sounded like a broken spring.
I had crawled under the car and didn't see anything wrong. Tonight, to humor
my wife, I crawled under again, this time w/ a trouble light.
I found that the bolt that holds the hub between the vertical link on the R
side had broken. Actually it looks like it had been broken for a while,
explaining a clunking noise I had not been able to diagnose for the past year,
and the hub had finally slipped out from between the two parts of the link.
I've ordered a new bolt, nut and washers, as well as new shocks while I'm at
it.
Has anyone gotten a broken bolt out of there? Is it threaded thru the hub or
should I be able to drive it out w/ a punch?
I can see this being pretty straightforward, just requiring some physical
effort, or it could be a doozy to repair.
