OK, so I've had my 'new' '69 on the road as a daily driver for the past month
or so, been running great. On Friday, as I was entering the local Interstate
highway, going about 45mph in 4th, I started hearing some very disturbing
sounds coming from the engine. Kind of hard to describe, but kind of like
someone taking a cup of marbles and dumping them in the cylinders. Needless to
say, I coasted to the shoulder (the engine died). Fortunately, my
brother-in-law saw me, so he towed me the 8 miles home. On Sunday, my 10-year
old boy and I took the engine out of the '69, and replaced it with the engine
from my donor car, and was driving it by Sunday night. I must say that the '74
engine as noticeably more power than the one from the '68. I haven't taken the
'69 engine apart yet to see what the problem was, but it's nice to have a spare
engine or two.

This all came about because my Jeep won't start, and I've reached the end of
my automotive expertise. I have an '89 Jeep Cherokee, 4WD, 4 liter I6. This
thing will crank fine, but will only start with the assistance of starting
fluid (ether). Same effect whether the engine is cold or hot. Once it starts,
it idles beautifully. I have good spark on all plugs, good fuel pressure, and
timing is dead-on. I've already replaced the O2 sensor, EGR valve, air bypass
valve, coil (all of those were tested and failed), and everything else tests
OK. This model has a Jeep proprietary OBD computer, and the computer doesn't
report any failures. Anyone have any ideas?
