The purpose of the damper oil is to keep the pistom from rising too
quickly and leaning the mixture out. When the butterfly valve opens
under acceleration it causes a greater vacuun to be applied to the jet
causing more fuel to flow while the damper prevents the piston from
rising immediately. This provides an enriched mixture, which is
accomplished on other carbs via an accelerator pump. It's good to try
different viscosities and find the one that works best for you. Too
thick or overfull and the car will be sluggish to thin or under full and
the car will tend to bog. i personally use marvel mystery oil year
round and it works well for me.
