Hello Kristi,
you wanted me to fill you in on this paint question.
I'm sending this over this list, because some people may be interested to learn
about problems that can occur when painting your own car.
a} Why this problem occurred
b} How we solved it.

History:
Most of the body work on my Spit had been done by the PO, some 10 -15 years ago.
We repaired some minor areas only.
We then prepped the car, painted all the panels, using base coat/clear.
Next we painted the tub.
All paint work, for the lack of a paint booth, took place outside.

When I painted the quarter panel, a bump, the size of a quarter, appeared.
We decided to repair it, because we wanted the care done right.
That done, we repainted the quarter panel, that's when we encountered the
difficulties.
The paint boiled up, looking like small craters.
We reprimered and repainted, the same thing happened.
After research with some professional painters, we were told to apply the
product
" Base fix", a neutralizer.
That didn't work either, the paint kept boiling again. We were facing a
chemical
reaction. The reducer in the paint was literally dissolving the underlying,
relatively fresh and uncured, paint.
We may have put too much fresh paint on the panel, the paint should maybe have
gone on dryer [using more air while applying]. The paint itself is designed to
be
used in a booth and baked at high heat, to achieve best result. We are painting
in a colder environment. Those little details, as minute as they may seem, play
a
great role in the proper application and outcome of a good paint job.
We ended up, sanding the whole panel down taken most of the first coat of paint
off, first using 400 grit on the rough areas, then finishing off with 1000 on
the
overall panel. We then primered, took a deep breath, said a little prayer , and
applied the base coat. It looked good. After that, the clear was also applied.
The overall job, as difficult as it was, now looks good.

Repairs on a freshly painted car are always difficult and tricky. It takes a
while until paint is cured and can withstand further treatment.
We are now assembling the engine, and can actually start putting the Spit back
together again. Hurrah......
The funny part is, we have professional painters as friends, who wanted to do
the
job for me for free. But Krist, you know me, I had to do this job by myself,
it's
my car, I will restore it.

Hope this helps.
The other, ever so bored hen, in Ontario,
God, don't you just love that one.........
flame me again, please
