Engine rebuild

I am planning an engine rebuild for my 1500, and I would like to know what I
can do to get better reliability and/or performance that would not be
considered part of a regular rebuild.  For example, I have heard that the
thrust washers can be pinned to the block to prevent them falling out.  Any
other recommendations?
