Well, those in the USA are probably going to hate us in the UK, but we're
spoiled for choice - then again, F1 is much more popular here I believe, as
it isn't competing with CHAMP cars.
We have live coverage that is on one of the 4 main free TV channels that
everyone can pick up. However, starting this year, there is also a Digital
Satellite channel entirely devoted to F1! There is full coverage of all the
practice, warm-ups, qualification and the race. You can use the interactive
features to switch between something like 6 screens - one general coverage
(similar to normal coverage), one following the leader, one following a
mid-field battle, one carrying on-board footage from any of the cars
(although the director chooses which car at what time), one from the pits,
one showing a table of positions, and soon apparently one will show a track
map with the position of every car around the track.
The catch - it costs #12 ($18) a race. Which sounds high-ish, but if you
are a keen fan and want to watch every race in the season, you are talking
about over #200 ($300), and I've got better things to spend that sort of
money on. Half that price and I'd probably watch the whole season that way
(I'd pay that much simply not to have adverts interrupting the coverage),
but at that price I will watch maybe 1 or 2 (Monaco and Britain most
likely), and the TV channel ends up with less of my money.
As for yesterdays race, well, it was pretty interesting - for the first 45
seconds or so. The on-board footage from Ralf Schumachers Williams as it
flew through the air was worth repeating over and over again! As for the
rest, Montoya overtook Schumacher and Schumacher overtook him back again,
and that was pretty much all the excitement - although the look on Mark
Webbers face as he came 5th at his first ever GP, in front of his home
crowd, in a Minardi, was quite a treat!
Williams really need to get a bit more speed. If Schumacher remains that
much faster than Montoya for the rest of the season, it'll get quite dull
quite quickly.
