Firstly, what makes you so sure it's not your clutch. Sounds like classic
worn clutch symptoms to me...
Secondly, I have heard warnings about using 'hypoid' oil in the gearbox -
warnings that suggest it will affect the overdrive, because it is actually
TOO slippy. Sorry, can't remember where from, it was a while ago (might
even have been in my MGBGT-owning days).
I did a little checking around, and all 'hypoid' seems to refer to is that
it is suitable for hypoid gears, i.e. gears where the teeth are cut at an
angle to the axis rather than parallel to it (good for noise, less good for
power transmission and wear, which is why passenger cars use them and race
cars use straight-cut). All the gear oil I could find at any local car
parts suppliers said 'hypoid' on the pack, so that is what I have used,
without problems.
It may be worth finding one of the suppliers of 'Classic' oils from Castrol
or Penrite, and filling up your 'box with their gear oil. It might help, it
might not, but all you've lost is the price of a gallon of oil.
