Relays (non lbc)

A while back someone wrote a great piece on relays for the headlights.
Unfortunately, I lost the email address of the sender, but have the
body of the email.

Anyway, I have a question for all the electrical gurus out there.
I have an electric air compressor for the air doors on my Bricklin.
I don't have any real specs on the motor, other than it is protected
by a 35A fuse. I have a 40A relay, I want to use to control the power
to this relay. The Bosch application notes I have, say that I should
put a "free-wheeling diode" (I think these used to be called "despiking
diodes) in parallel with the motor. My question is anyone have any idea
(how to calculate) what size (or type, ie part #) diode I should use?

TIA

John
