...or so it seems. Here's what I did. I ordered an ammeter from our friends
at JC Whitney. The wiring diagram showed it harnessed as follows (although
first, I'll mention that it instructed to remove all wires leading to the top
post of the starter solenoid with the exception of the battery power supply,
as indicated below):

   [+] terminal ---[wire]---Starter Solenoid Top Terminal---[factory
wire]---Battery
     / |
Ammeter Starter Solenoid
     \
[-] terminal ---[wire]---Other wires that used to be connected with the
battery wire to the starter solenoid.

So it seems to be attached in a way that makes the ammeter complete the
circuit between the battery and the wires that were detached from the starter
solenoid.

Here's what happened the first time I tried starting the car: a' click' ,
sorta like the one you get when your battery is discharged and the solenoid
can't turn the starter.

Try two: same thing

Try three: Everything goes blank. No electricity to anything. Flashers don't
work, lights don't work, ignition doesn't work, nothing.

Why did I try three times when it didn't start the first time? Lucas wiring
in my brainm perhaps? Maybe even worse. Magnetti Marelli. But let's not focus
on that...

Does anyone know what I might have done? I'm thinking of four possibilities,
or a possible combination of 1,2,3, or all 4:

1) Blown voltage regulator
2) Blown battery
3) Blown ignition switch
4) Blown starter solenoid

Please help me! I've got this car running so good now and I want to drive it!

Thanks in adversity and advance!
