sway bar

I am putting my 73 GT6 back together and I have a strange front sway 
bar.  The bar has a collar of some sort around one end of the bar where the 
stud screws in.  Has anyone seen anything like that?  It does not look like 
a mod, but it could just be an OLD mod.  I am betting that the end of the 
bar was cracking and the PPPPO drove this collar on to reenforce it.  I may 
try to drive it off to see.
