I take it Fred you mean you can't tihten the studs up? I had to remove the
head from my car recently and took the opportunity when doing the removal
(leaving both manifolds connected) to tighten the studs up given that I had
unimpeded access from the block, water pump etc. I did use a spanner that I
had deformed get round the exhaust manifold, even then I could only rotate 1
flat at a time.

You're right though, it does deserve to be way up there in the crappiest
design stakes.

If an award could ever be presented for the worst engineering design, it
would have to be for the Spitfire 1500 carb., intake and exhaust manifold
setup. It has to be the very worst design ever for any automobile. It is
certainly easy to understand why the lower studs were never in place on my
car. I hope this engineer is stocking shelves in a dept store someplace in a
very hot climate.  "FT"
