I've owned a couple diesels and they all had two batteries for that purpose
already installed in them. Also, not that any mechanic would recommed it
but starter fluid in the intake will start any diesel engine in the coldest
winter without glowplugs, well almost any winter (waiting to be challenged
on the artic circle).

Yeah, but the "getting it started" part is the killer. I knew a guy in
Germany who kept a second battery in his house (and we're talking about
typical Mercedes Diesel batteries here, the ones with the big rope handles)
cause when it got really cold inthe middle of those Nord-Rhein winters he
couldn't get the thing started on the charge in one battery. (Hmmm. maybe
all he needed were new glow plugs??)
All the best.
