Doug, I almost always disconnect the battery when working on the car unless 
it's of course an electrical problem I am trying to solve, but they are so 
simple anyway (having an electronics and electrical degree, ex radio ham etc. 
etc. helps)

Also I have found that most things have a simple solution although it's often 
hard to figure out. Most time the books don't really show the part in teh 
middle. For example I was trying to figure out which grommets teh choke and 
speedo cables should route though as they were both in one and all the manuals 
show is wither end and not the routing. ( If anyone has the definitive answer 
for a 76 spitfire I would appreciate it BTW).

Also I had redone the procedure 3 times now as the clutch is having problems. 
First crunch on down shifts - bled system - now no disengagement -  rebuilding 
mc and slave to hopefully fix. Getting used to the old memories of contorting 
under the dashboard again. Have not really done that for about  15 years.

That's the correct procedure.  The first time I tried to take the knob off my 
O/D tranny,
I loosened the chrome conical nut, and I assumed the knob would simply unscrew.
I tried so hard that I put a twist in the shift lever!

Fortunately neither wire going to the switch carries straight 12 volts.  
Otherwise
Spits would have even more electrical fires than they do!
