Actually you don't really need the spreader.  For a production assembly
line I could see the advantage, but for the occasional R/R It isn't really
necessary.  I've taken apart and reassembled many of these diffs and never
had a problem.  The pre load for the carrier bearings is very small, and
simply tapping on the carrier will allow it to be persuaded out.  Likewise,
on reassembly, slightly tapping carefully on the very edge of the shims,
with the correct pre load, will allow you to reassemble the bearing caps -
