So tell me exactly how SAE threads work into this.  And how come I can't
find taps and dies for them at a hardware store but can find some at NAPA.

there is also B.A. threads=  British Association Standard Thread used for
threads smaller than 1\4 inch Lucas and Smiths would have used them on their
early instruments.
