Kevin,

Going from memory here, so I hope this is right. It applies to my UK-spec 1500,
with dual HS4s, but I shouldn't think that would be too different to the 1296
engine.

If I recall, on each carb, there is a fork. The rod which connects the carbs
has a kind of hooked tooth thing on each end, which fit into the forks. As the
choke on one carb is operated by the cable, the fork swivels, acting on the hook
and turning the connecting rod. The tooth on the other end of the rod acts on
the fork of the second carb, moving the choke on that carb too. It is not
possible for one to move without the other. I believe this is similar to the
way in which the throttles on the two carbs are connected together (although the
connection of the cable is very different).

Hope that's not too hard to visualise. Like I said, it's from memory, so it may
not be accurate. If it is wrong, though, I know someone will correct me.

Hope that helps,

Dean

Subject: Dual SU choke cables?

Hello again gang,

I am just spewing questions today. Freddy the Spit is a 77 frame and tub
with a 69 1296 engine - hence dual SU's. The PO rigged a simple accelerator
linkage consisting of a bent piece of aluminum and the original 77 cable -
not pretty but it works. I have a nice pattern for a better arrangement
that Joe Curry was kind enough to share - hope to get to that this winter
too. The choke linkage is a problem - it is just the original 77 single
carb choke cable hooked up to one of the carbs, with the interconnection
rods between the two activating the choke on the other carb (hope this
makes sense).

The problem is that this works fine for the carb that the cable is actually
hooked to, but on the other carb the choke will stick on almost every time.
It does not matter which carb I hook the cable to, the other will always
stick. I have tried cleaning and lubricating everything, there is just not
quite enough oomph in the choke return spring without a little help from
the cable being pushed in.

So, all of you out there with dual SU's, what are you doing? I see that
various Triumphs with OEM dual carbs have a sort of forked cable
arrangement that works on both carbs at once - is that the answer? I am
completely open to any and all suggestions on this - Freddy is about the
least original Triumph in the land anyway - he would give a Concours Judge
apoplexy! ;-)

TIA

Freddy the Spit 69, 74, 77, 80 - and those are just the parts I am sure
of... ;-)

45 degrees out today - starting to get Triumph fever!!
