OK, it's been a while since I asked about this problem, but what with
the thread on tach calibration, I thought I'd solicit some new guesses
as to solution.
Problem: Replaced Lucas CEI Electronic ignition amp and existing coil
with Crane Electronic ignition and Crane PS 20 coil. When I went to tune
engine, noticed tach (Smiths Electronic) would not read above 1500 rpm
(became erratic and not go above about 2000 rpm). Lower rpm's 'appeared'
to be correct. Had same problem when I hook my Sears Shop tach as well.
Contacted Crane techies and they suggested using their PS 60 coil vice
the PS 20 I had installed. AND, they sent me one for free. But, it
didn't help. Unfortunately, I trash canned the original coil, so I
couldn't reinstall it to see what would happen. Don't want to rewire the
old CEI amp back to check if it makes a diff, altho even if it did, I
would stay with the Crane amp.
Anyone have any ideas on what happened and how to correct it? I would
like to have a fairly accurate tach, as my speedo reads about 5-10 miles
from correct.
TIA for any help.
Cheers,
