Thanks just the same folks.  The gent that sent me the top called shortly
after my post and gave me the suggestion I needed to successfully refit the
top while I still had some daylight left -- attach the gearshift to the
cover while still off the transmission and put it in reverse, thereby taming
that pesky reverse gear lever that was getting in the way.  The cover is
back on properly.
