I think that definitely the gaiter opening around the shift lever could be a 
source of fumes into the cockpit.  I've been meaning to fix all those 
exhaust leaks but my mind tends to wander lately......too much CO, maybe!  
Maybe I'll just wrap a rubber band around it until I can find an OEM type 
item.

Several of the listers have presented other creative fixes.  I like the 
spark plug boot idea!  Thanks....
