DOn't fret on the vent piece. You will be able to find used ones. Sorry I can't
help you on that. I'm sure one of the other listers can help.
As for the starting point..starting at the ash tray is OK. If you are using
contact cement, you may have problems with the vinyl holding after some period
of time especially when it gets warm. The oils in the vinyl bleed through and
loosen the cement. The edges come loose as does the area around the ash tray.
You should be able to minimize this to some degree by "de-greasing" the back of
the vinyl. Try something like Castrol Super Clean. I haven't found anything
better for removing grease and oil. Thoroughly rinse with water and let dry
before applying cement. The problem is you won't know the results until the hot
weather arrives again next year, unless you are lot further south than me.
If you are using epoxy, it should be more tolerant.
