Dear listers,
Me and my girlfriend just purchased a 1976 spitfire 1500. We
wanted a car the was n relativly good shape and that we could drive arround
on sunny days. We had decided that we would enjoy the car and not spend too
much time or money on repairs (proper maintenance but not repairs). We have
had the car for 2 months now and I almost prefer fixing it rather then
driving it. I'm very lucky to have my best friend who is an excellent auto
mechanic at a local dealer. He is very well equiped but it's his natural
talent that makes him such an assest(sucking up because i know he reads from
the list). I don't do any work unless he's around. And trust me when I say
that i'm spending more time with him then ever.

I have now come to the point where I would like to improve the look of the
car by touching up the paint and I have a few questions.

The paint on the car is the original and I'm wondering if it's worth
preserving. There are dozens (and then some)of little "spots" all over the
car. They are only 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch in diameter but there are quite a
few and they brought friends. (I make it sound worse then it is. Most of
the spots aren't noticable when standing 2 feet away.

Is it worth preserving the original paint? I would gladly have the car
sandblasted and repainted but I hate to loose the original paint.

Is there a transperent coat of paint I can aply after I'm done the touch ups
to protect the paint?

how many coats of piant do you recommend?

do the compound on the car before or after touch ups?

Do you recommend any particular brands:paint, compound etc?

As you can see I have done this hundreds of times in the past so all info on
body work would be appreciated

If anyone knows any good bodyshops in montreal or area I would love to know.
